leveling and damp proofing concrete floor

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 2.47 PM

Hi. I have just taken up some uneven tiles on my kitchen floor ( 4 tiles 600 x 600 }. The floor under each tile i have removed has been visibly wet, but has dried in a few hours of the tile being lifted. There has been a screed / self leveler been put down before the tiles have been laid. This seams to come up pretty easily The workmanship on the floor is of a shocking standard. My plan is to remove the kitchen, take up all the tiles and take up the old screed and redo it. I've never done this before and i'd like to know how i go about it. What is best to damp proof the floor? how thick should the leveling compound be? I was thinking of using a liquid dpm then self leveler then a sealer on top of that. I will be tiling the floor again. any help will be much appreciated. Please point me in the right direction Cheers

As a rule self levelling screeds need an active DPM at some point below them other wise they will likely de-bond due to damp and this could be the reason it seems to be lifting easily. I would think a strip out and start again would be your best option, you should consider where/why there is water evident before making good. Points to consider: what is the age of the property, what is the make up of the subfloor, is there any likelihood of the dampness soaking up into the walls once you seal the floor (as the water will possibly move to the sides of the floor). If you have not undertaken any of this type of work before then i would highly recommend an experienced company/person carries out the work on your behalf, ask for genuine references and not just finished work photos, as you now well know once the tiles are down it looks great for a while. Good luck.
