Plastering & Rendering

Render restoration - what are my options?

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.06 PM

Hello! I have an old solid brick house. The tired looking tyrolean render has blown and cracked in patches - due to cracks in brickwork and/or water getting in behind. Around 15% of it will fall off, the other 85% is still solid even when giving it a whack with a hammer. I'm not planning on staying in the house long-term, so want to know what are the lower cost options? At the same time, I want it to be of sound quality - I don't want the next owner to buy a bodged job that won't last. An external insulation grant would have been perfect, but the internet is telling me when they return in April, to claim I would have to be on certain benefits, which I don't receive. Frustrating! I have Googled my options, but there seems to be so many different opinions about restoring/re-doing render. Hacking it all off and starting again would be ideal I know, but it isn't going to happen with my available budget. It's been suggested that if you try and patch up and blend in that you will be able to see the difference (I don't want this) - is this right? So your best quality cheapest option please?!? Thank you in advance! Tina x

Hi, you can just hack off the worst bits that have blown and patch it and blend it in if your budget doesn't allow to re render it all,

i agree. a good plasterer would blend it in well, as long as you get the Tyrolean colour right it shouldn't show up to badly. you can always paint it if it doesn't match up.
