Chimney breast with patches on which look like damp?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.04 PM

Chimney breast with patches on which look like damp - on my chimney breast both downstairs and upstairs have patches on them which are darker than the current paint on the wall. Some days darker than others. Some days they don't appear. Wondering what this could be? Looked online and people state this could be the led on the chimney which needs looking at. Can anyone shed any light on this? They are only small patches but a good few go them. Patch size ranges from 5cmx5cm

Chimney damp and penetration is very common, especially on very old properties (sometimes called flue damp) - it is also common when people seal off old chimneys and don't allow them to vent/breath. Growth of vegetation in the top is also common as is bird nests etc. Lead flashing, as you mention, also common but my gut is not this from symptoms you describe. How old is the property and do you know of what construction it is? someone on here may then be able to better advise you. Cheers, Martin
