Landscape Gardening Question

Tree roots entering my garden

I live in a council property, My neighbors own their home. I have been working in the garden and they own about five fir-type trees, it irks me anyway as they are very tall and block alot of light. I have also found in the corner very large roots coming under the fence and this is where I intend to lay patio. I considered severing the root but I am afraid that this will make the tree unstable and my garden will be unsafe for my son.

Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Stephen
