Using Celotex to insulate sound through door

Anonymous user 29 December 2015 - 2.33 PM

I live in a shared house with friends and I have a door with glass panels for my bedroom door. I have stuck card over the glass panels to provide privacy for myself, but have found that this doesn't provide any help in terms of noise. The small amount of research I have done online has led me to think it'll be cheaper and easier to insulate the door with some kind of board as opposed to changing the door (it's an odd size door and it's a rented house). I have found some 25mm Celotex insulation board and I was wondering if this would work for cutting to size and then simply screwing onto the door? Is 25mm thick enough? Any thicker and I think it would cause trouble with the door opening enough due to the hinge type on the door. Is this likely to help with noise? Or is this board more for heating and thermal uses? If it's not suitable does anyone have any suggestions on alternative board or methods that could help with this issue? (Other than finding less noisy housemates, of course!) Many thanks in advance for any responses.

Celotex or similar board would be mostly for reducing heat transfer. To reduce sound you would be better using wood fibre or rockwool batts. These absorb more sound. I would recommend wood fibre as it is nicer to work with but it might be trickier to get hold of. It is also harder to fix to the door. Alex
