HELP - Roof tile broken and sitting high after solar install

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

I need some helpfull advise on my roof! I have just had solar installed and have been up to inspect the job and found that the tiles that are sitting on the mounting brackets are sitting high and I was told that they would grind the tiles to stop this from happening but they have not. Here is a link to the pictures I have taken: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=131851BA832047D8!617&authkey=!AOtjbGDfy7CxM1g&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg So I have been back to the solar company telling them I am not happy and there response was: "From what I can see the tiles are seated at the top but a few are slightly raised at the bottom, none of which is particularly detrimental and certainly this does not affect the water proofing. The two tiles shown are not broken but have the bottom edges chipped off and again that is a minor issue not affecting the waterproofing. In fact you will remember that we replaced three tiles in far worse condition than this. However if you are not happy and are prepared to sign a waiver stating that you take full responsibility for the tile strengthening being removed at the bottom we will do this." To which I feel I should not have to waive my rights when they have not completed the job as agreeded. Second reason is they cut the felt to pass the cables through on the from instead of passing through the felt sheets so I now have a hole in the felt!! So my question is: Would having tiles like this allow water to ingress onto the felt and battens? And if so could leak through the felting where the hole has been cut?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

As a retired loss adjuster I have seen many tiles like this and also shallow pitched roofs which fail at the eaves or where tiles lift due to wind driven rain perishing the undertile felt. This defect normally emerges circa 10 years after a poorly fitted roof is completed and the builder/roofer has absconded. I also see the difficulty the installers of these products face. I have a solution which I would be happy to use on my own roof in this situation but it may not be to everybody's taste, that said it is better than weakening the tiles or leaving them proud for the felt to degrade over a period of years. SOLUTION: Google a product called Flexim roof putty, my local supplier is: The roof shop (Cheltenham). You would need one brick of this product (less than £20) which has a BBA CERTIFICATE. We have just raked out our verge end and installed this, it is easy to fit, the colour matches the tile and it is flexible. Your problem with access in place - 20 minutes work. Hope this helps.
