I would like to help to answer your question. You asked how to connect an old 60mm waste pipe to a 40mm waste pipe.

You need to purchase a 'Flexible Adaptor' Flexseal 63mm to 40mm Rubber Flexible Drainage Adaptor Coupling - You can find this item at Drainage

The adapter couplings have a step moulded elastomeric sleeve that has different diameters at each end. The sleeve is fitted with two stainless steel clamping bands that provide an efficient method of connecting pipes that have varying outside diameters, eradicating possible bush requirements.

At the time of writing the price is - £13.26 inc VAT
You will need a flat head screw driver so slide onto each pipe and screw the union bands to ensure a tight seal.
