Plumbing Question

Standing water in bathtub waste pipe - why?

An odd question I suppose but it bugs me - this is now the second property where I've encountered the phenomenon that water is filled up in the bathtub drain pipe right up to the sink plughole. So, the first thing when taking a shower or running the tabs in the bathtub is that the old water from the pipe flows back into the tub rather than down the drain. I tried sink unblocker the other day but that would just stay on top of the water and make the plug fitting go black ...

Why is that and can anything be done about it? I find the idea of having my feet immersed in old waste water quite repulsive and thus, the shower experience isn't a relaxing and pleasant one.

The waste pipe to the trap must run uphill or be higher than the top of the trap/waste outlet at some point.Needs to be rerun and distcharged at a lower point.

Well it sounds like none of the bathroom fittings are draining correctly and share a common waste. If at all possible you you get someone to re pipe either the bath or shower waste on a seperate waste, so they can run and drain independent of each other.
