Earth missing in main light fitting

Hi I have an older house and have taken down the main ceiling light in the lounge to put up a new one. The wires coming off the main ceiling light connection are live and neutral only. the new light has earth connection on it but as the main connection has no earth wire am I able to connect it anyway without the earth or do I have to get the connection replaced with an earth wire?
thanks
mark.

Pre 1970s wiring did not come with a Cpc or earthing. You can change the light without having the Cpc. However you should use an electrician to change the light for you. There should also be a warning note on your consumer unit stating lights circuits have no Cpc. This also may be something you wish to invest in having rewired. As without any earth there is no protection for you.

Just pick the phone up and ring an Electrician. Or post the job on my builder.

If it's a metal fitting unless it's duoble insulated it can't be fitted without an earth basically if it becomes live and somebody touches it they become the earth with nasty consequences

The same is true of switches if you have them get the earthed or removed before someone dies
