best steps to take to upgrade electric shower

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Hi there. We have a Galaxy Aqua 1000 electric shower (not sure how old). When the shower is turned on the temperature is fine at first but the pressure is poor. When the shower is turned on only a quarter of the maximum the pressure is reasonable (not "powerful") but by then the water is running cold - generally a pretty poor shower experience. The shower is rated at 7.5 or 8.5kw according to their website (it doesn't say which on the unit). The water pressure throughout the rest of the house seems to be fine, including the cold feed to the bath which the shower is connected to. We want to get a better shower but before we buy one we'd like to establish why this one is so poor to make sure we buy the right one. I have a few questions please: How do we determine why our shower experience is so bad? Who could we contact to have our shower assessed (plumber? electrician? bathroom specialist?) Are there any tests we can perform ourselves? The shower is a cheap model - is this the likely problem even though the power rating seems to be fairly standard? Would a more expensive model with the same power rating be any better? If we upgraded to a 10.5kw model would this significantly improve the performance? Are electric showers ever any good? - we like the idea of running electric rather than installing one off the combi boiler. Cheers

As a general rule electric showers aren't hugely powerful unless you go for a really top of the range Mira or something similar. If you're thinking of upgrading to a 10.5kW shower it will be more powerful than your existing 8.5kW however you may need to upgrade the cable that runs to the shower to take the extra wattage. In doing that the cost can start to climb quite dramatically as the cable is quite expensive. If you have a combi boiler you would probably be better off getting a mixer shower run directly from that as they are much more powerful.
