Fitting RSJ to extension

Anonymous user 18 December 2014 - 10.18 PM

I have two storey house. The existing rear wall is 300mm thick. I am building single storey extension at the back and fitting an RSJ to open the rear room into the extension. The RSJ I have is 203mm wide which will support the back wall 2nd storey. As the wall is 300mm thick will the RSJ width of 203mm be sufficient as there is an overhang ?

If you are installing a supporting steel beam ,you should have architect and structural engineering drawings , if there are alterations required contact the aforementioned and have them tell you how to proceed , follow the details and you’ll be fine, no guesswork!!

if the wall is 300 thick it is common sense that the rsj as you call them must be the same Peter

no you will need two rsj about 145 width and depending on the width ,concrete pad stones under the beam might not be sufficient you might have to put in a steel goal post arrangement
