Painting brick fireplace

Hello, I wondered if you could advise me on how to paint a brick fireplace. It is red brick, seems to have been varnished. I'd like to paint it white, but not sure the best way to do this, or the best type of paint ( or where i can find it) Any advice much apreciated.

You might need to sand the varnish off as the new paint may not hold. Would advice Sandtex masonry paint available from most paint shops

Or to make job easier get 1l
Zinsser
BIN Primer-Sealer & Stain Killer red tin.
Sticks to all surfaces without sanding.
Dries very fast.
After that you can paint any paint you like.
