Is lead flashing necessary below a u-pvc window?

We have a 1920's bay-fronted house which, until recently had tiles on the front of the bay below the U-PVC bedroom window. There was also lead flashing to a depth of 150mm which overlapped the tiles. We have recently had the old tiles removed and replaced with PVC cladding. Is it necessary to retain the lead flashing and if so, to what depth as it looks very unsightly against the white?

Your window fitter may agree to fit a white pvc angle to the underside of the sill which would serve the same purpose as your lead flashing.
