Down lights -LED/Fire rated

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 2.50 PM

I'm planning on getting some down lights at home, can I use ordinary downlight units with LED bulbs (less heat) or would I still require fire rated ones or fire hoods? Also want down lights fitted in the fascia boards of the house, is there special outdoor ones required or is there ample protection from the elements? Same applies again with LED/fire rated/fire hoods. Many thanks.

Hi Smck125, All the recessed spot light for every ceiling required fire rated if above the ceiling is going to be used as living space. Also using LED bulb will reduce fire risk from bulb local heat prospective but fire rated light is mainly to prevent fire spreading from one floor to next floor! if that makes clear Now fire rated light cost under £7 on and average + you can use LED light bulb GU10 from cheap maker to branded. Have a nice day. Vin

Regulations are that if there are living areas above the light fittings then they are required to be fire rated (this actually means retaining the integrity of the ceiling the fitting is cut into and has nothing to do with the heat generated by the light). I personally always use fire rated fittings as I do not think its worth scrimping on a couple of pounds for the fitting. As for the facia boards do you mean the soffit boards Standard fire rated fittings are fine in the soffits with RCD protection and compliance with current regs.

Always fit fire rated spotlights even when using LED lamps.

For the sake of a few quid fit fire rated fittings, there's lots of arguments around in what is an actual fire barrier in the home, which areas should be covered (fire rating of plaster ceilings, livings areas, if there's a loft conversion, what type of doors are fitted etc etc) Again for the facia boards, use fire rated and suitably rated for external use.
