Painting oak skirting boards

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.04 PM

I would like to paint my oak skirting boards white to match my doors and windows. I was told that I bought the wrong type of wood as you don't paint oak but it is a bit too late. The skirting boards are untreated and I want to paint them white. Do I need to oil these skirting before painting with primer? I have no idea so any help is appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi you havnt got the wrong wood its just a shame to paint oak as its great with clear varnish but to paint it all you need is all purpose wood primer then sand it down apply undercoat then sand again (not be hard to sand this time) then apply top coat (1-2 coats). That will do the job for you.

Hi your best of getting Notting solution and apply to all knots before you undercoat your skirts as some knots can still leak sap after painting them and this will effectively remove this problem from happening then follow as instructed by JF decorators but a a Notting agent should always be applied to new wood many thanks ash from show home paints
