Who do I hire to treat condensation mould?

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.07 PM

I have a problem with condensation mould right through a previously rented property, where the tenants did not inform me of any problem and just painted and papered over it. The house is now empty and I'd like to get the mould and mildew removed. Who do I hire? Is a builder needed or will a painter and decorator be able to treat and paint over? Or is it as simple as hiring a cleaner?

Hi there. Without looking at the property you could need different trades. When I read your question my first thought was airflow/heating. My bathroom from a previous house had an inadequate extractor fan and was poorly heated, good news for mold/ condensation bad news for my ceiling which had to be replaced, previous owners had left it too long. My bedroom had two external walls inadequately heated and insulated, thin old insulation in the loft, and old floorboards underneath a cold farm stone floor, factors contributing over time in mold in my lower walls and wardrobes and dampness to the air. Also it was found the air bricks had been covered over with cement to prevent bees nesting. How many trades is that now......... A good property maintenance company would be a good starter I think. Cleaning alone would only hide the underlying problem/s it will come back. A good general builder. On the flip side get the property surveyed. Hope that helps.
