rain before pointing patio, do i need to cover?

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 2.49 PM

We are having a natural stone patio laid and will be finished being laid tomorrow. However it is due to rain the following evening (and for few days afterwards) and pointing is not going to be done til next weekend. Do i need to cover the patio to keep the rain off or will the unpointed paving be ok being exposed to the rain? Patio is 40m2 so largs and dont know what id cover it with if needed. Any ideas?

It depends on how they are pointing it. If they are using 'geofix' or something similar then it can be done in the wet but if they are doing it traditionally it does need to be dry. Its their worry anyway, not yours. Let them deal with it, you are paying them after all!!

There is no point in trying to cover the patio as water will almost certainly get in somewhere. If you or your landscaper has a blower he can blow out any joints the day before. As long as it is dry on the day then should be fine. Alternatively you can point with a resin based pointing mix. This actually need to be laid to a wet surface then pointed and washed off. More expensive but could save time if its wet.

I recommend using joint-it as we have never had a problem using it and it is ideal to use in the wet.
