Windows Question

Old sash windows not staying open

We've just cleaned up some old sash windows, and put new rope in them etc etc, but they still seem to be not working quite right. They operate as they should, other than a little stiffness as we pull them down - but they do not stay up if pushed up - instead they slide down to the bottom. I assume that at sometime someone did some repairs to them and decided to put new weights in that are wrong?? Also, how could i make them move a bit more smoothly as they are a struggle to open and close at the moment. thanks a lot. Oliver

any repairs will have changed the weight, if the glass has been replaced it may originally been 2mm it may now be 4mm that will have changed the weight, extra coats of paint will stop the window working properly, you need to remove the window weigh it then alter the weights accordingly.
