Painting front door using interior paint

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 2.46 PM

We all know that you should get the right paint for the right job, but we have most of a tin of leftover interior eggshell paint that is the perfect colour for the exterior of our wooden front door. Is there a way to use this paint on an exterior surface e.g. by using some product to weatherproof it after painting? Or do we just need to accept that we have to buy yet more paint? Cheers!

Hi, I would not recommend using any interior paint for exterior work, but if you really want to try it, overcoat it with exterior clear varnish. It will slightly darken the colour but it should work although probably won't last as long as proper exterior paint. Also if you don't have any varnish, it will be cheaper if you buy a small tin of exterior paint. Hope this helps. Tom

Hi First of all not good idea to use interior paint for external use, wouldn't recommend it at all, with the different seasons and weather you would just find your work would be ruined, also in warm weather paint would discolour and in bad weather would start to flake thus giving your door problems as it won't have the same protection as an exterior paint, best thing to do is just buy an exterior paint that way you know that your wooden door has the protection it needs from the weather and won't tarnish or may rot with just using and internal paint, hope this helps. Using interior paint on exterior areas is not recommended at all. Use it for the inside but I'm afraid it is better to buy more paint. More guarantee Better Results. Longer lasting.
