Painting Satinwood on already glossed doors

Anonymous user 14 March 2024 - 2.31 PM

I have started to paint Dulux trade diamond satinwood on glossed doors and frames. The result looks patchy and shadowy, not impressed with the finish, even after 3 coats. It says on the tin no undercoat is needed. Would it solve my problem if we were to undercoat or primer to get a nice all white uniform finish in satinwood. Please advise the name of the undercoat if that's what's needed.

Putting a water based paint on top of an oil based gloss without properly rubbing down to provide a key is always going to give you problems .Ive come across woodwork in the past where this has been done and have had to peel it off with a scraper. It may look good for a while but will not last and just makes any future decoration a lot harder.I always use Zinnser bulls eye 123 as a primer/Sealer when using a water based system as this product itself is water based but sticks to glossy surfaces without sanding .You still need to sand down all the rough woodwork and clean down the surfaces if you want a perfect looking finish that will last for years and also stay white

I'm not a big fan of satinwood as its finish can be quite dull. I used a small 4 inch roller on my doors and skirtings and after undercoating with some old white matt I had hanging around the shed, the original colour of the woodwork was a dark brown, after a couple of coats it's not perfect but not too bad either and a heck of a lot better than it was. I don't want to sound patronising but stir the paint well before use, a lot of people forget to. I hope this has been of some help.
