Carpentry & Joinery Question

French doors fail to close after fitting parliament hinges

I have fitted French doors using parliament hinges. Despite recessing the hinges and ensuring that everything is at right angles, the doors do not fit properly against the frame and fails to close. Why is this and how do I solve the problem?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting the question. There are a number of reasons why the doors are not closing properly. The exact problem was not clear from the question but here are a few things that you could try:
1. Take off doors. Re-set the hinges on door frame by a few mm away from the door stop. That may work.
2. Take off both doors and hinges. Plane a 'lead in' edge on the doors then chop out hinges again. Hopefully that should do it.
3. Make sure you have a 2 to 3 mm gap down the hinge side when doors are in closed position. If not it means that the hinges maybe set too deep.- loosen hinge screws when doors are on then you may have to slide a little packing under the hinge (frame side) if the doors are hard to close.

Well - good luck with that and I hope that one of those work.
