Electrical Question

Moulded plug earther?

I have a new TV which came with a moulded plug. The wire is too short so I propose to use another. As it is moulded I can't see if it earthed without cutting the wire but it is a little thicker and looks very similar, it is moulded with a 5 amp fuse the same as the one which came with the TV. Is there any way of confirminng without cutting the wire?

If the lead unplugs from the TV end, then the easiest way to tell is to look at the TV end of the leads. If its fairly oblong and has three little slots on the end that goes into the TV then its Class 1 (i.e. earthed), if its a flatter cable and the end has a flat plug that looks like a squashed figure of 8 with two pin holes when viewed end on, then its Class 2 (i.e. unearthed).

...and if its one that's connected directly to the tv, and you intend to cut the moulded plug off anyway, you'll know at that point whether there is an earth core in the flex.
