About R.Hughes Building and Conservation Ltd
We are a traditional building company that works on listed buildings and heritage properties. We carry out extensions, barn conversions, garden walls, orangeries and repoint and repair both brick and stone masonry but our specialist skill is in historic brickwork. We are trained to work on all historic brickwork ranging from medieval castles to Victorian terraced houses using traditional techniques, materials and tools. Skills covered are lime mortar repointing, gauged brickwork, brick replacement and tuck pointing. We are lime mortar specialists having been trained in its use and having used it for a number of years now.
I myself, the owner of the company and the leading craftsman was trained by world renowned master bricklayer Dr. Gerard Lynch as was our other experienced bricklayer. We currently have a mature apprentice. We also have other craftsmen we call upon for our larger projects such as other brick and stone masons, lime plasterers, master carpenters, roofers and also plumbers and electricians for extension work. We are used to dealing with conservation officers where necessary and also with architects.
Our residential work ranges from small repointing and repair projects on terraced houses to extensions and barn conversions on grade II listed buildings. We also carry out work on national trust properties, most recently grade I listed Belton House.
We are honest, reliable, highly skilled craftsmen with a passion for conserving and restoring historic buildings. We are members of the FMB which can provide insurance backed guarantees on work where required. We are also members of SPAB and the building limes forum where we keep up to date with everything conservation!

Repoint/repair bricks of period house (one wall) Repointing
Great communication, especially as the Coronavirus Pandemic got in the way of this job. Rick kept me fully up to date and a suitable start date was agreed. He and his assistants turned up as arranged, were intelligent, pleasant and agreeable, worked hard and with commitment to making a good job of the pointing and brickwork repairs on our 200+ year old house. He charged a sensible price for the work which was done with care.
I cannot recommend this business highly enough and would engage Rick again if I had more work to do.janice62562 - 10th Dec, 2019 Positive review

Lime Render Repointing Repointing
Where do I start? Rick, Tom, and Jamie do not only do beautiful work and with great care, they are a pleasure to have around!
My husband and I hired Rick after moving into a Grade II listed home last year. It had been seriously neglected on the outside which left us dealing with rainy weather entering our home. After initially touching base, Rick personally came out to the house and his extensive knowledge and appreciation for old buildings was so evident we didn’t even bother with quote comparisons.
Covid pushed back our start dates and a neglectful window installer left us and Rick with further delays but he could not have been more accommodating, understanding, and helpful.
There is more work to be done and we won’t be calling anyone else! If you want quality work, friendly folks and just an all around stress free experience, I could not recommend R.Hughes Building & Conservation enough!
