About James Kelly Architects
Over the past 9 years of my architectural career I have developed my skills & abilities in a wide range of fields, experiencing small, medium & large practices both in the UK and internationally. In addition to the responsibilities I have held as a project architect on educational, retail & commercial schemes. I also have a specialism for contemporary design for small scale developments with tricky planning constraints.
I typically undertake work on the small to medium scale and my three most recently completed jobs include:
1. New Building Detached Dwelling, Ilkley - The Client commissioned this project to develop his sizeable garden into a building plot for a partially subterranean 4 bedroom house. The unique aspect of this design was that it was an "upside down" house. The bedrooms were located on the lower ground floor level with living spaces (lounge, kitchen, dining, etc) located on the upper floor level which optimised the idyllic, panoramic views across Ilkley Moor and to the Yorkshire Dales beyond.
2. Mixed Use, Commercial & Residential Development, Rochdale - A single derelict shop with flat above existed on site when the decision was made to demolish the property and re-build it larger to accommodated 2no. shops and 2no. 3bedroom apartments above. Careful negotiations were undertaken with the Local Authority planning officers who wanted the scheme to be reduced in size, however, the design justified the scale and massing within the context to the satisfaction of the Client and the planner.
3. Contemporary House Renovation, Oldham - The doctor client on this particular job had purchased a dated property within a leafy suburb of Oldham with the intention of demolishing it and re-building his dream home. The design was of contemporary influence utilising high quality materials such as large glazing, render and Aluminium. The resulting scheme was a four bedroom family house with ensuite bathrooms, office, open-plan living space, utility, gymnasium and changing room.
