  • Fitting carpet for new loft stairs

    Very disappointed. Still have strong chemical smell 5 weeks after carpet fitting in the kid’s bedroom, with the window open and heating on all the time. Refused to acknowledge the problem. Tony said he couldn’t smell it as he lost smell after covid. Edward insisted it’s dusty smell and not from the carpet. Obviously the smell is chemical like and come from the carpet. We used 3 bottles of vinegar and 2 kg baking soda to get rid of it. Will never use again or recommend.

    We supplied and fitted carpet to 2 staircases and a large landing. We used a 100% wool carpet and standard 10mm underlay. Some weeks later we supplied exactly the same 100% wool carpet and underlay to a bedroom, which had not been inhabited for some months. This is a wool carpet made of natural material it is not even a “manmade” product.

    We were called and discussed as “chemical smell’ as a matter of good customer care we visited the property and were able to confirm that this smell, which seemed more of a damp musty smell was not from the new carpet which we had fitted some weeks before. None of the first installation had this issue and as both areas used the identical materials we could only state that we did not believe the smell was from the carpet and we have spent years fitting carpet and had never experienced this issue before. We are professional carpet fitters and do not have the knowledge or expertise to know where this smell is coming from but no it is not from the carpet. We did point out that there is an open chimney in the room and there could be something in there but this was dismissed out of hand.

    Unfortunately, the customer does not want to listen to our opinion and as such we cannot offer a solution to a smell we know is not coming from the carpet.

    Finally, if we thought there was an issue with a product we supplied we would change it and return it to the manufacturer.
