Make a downstairs bathroom/wetroom

I posted the job on MyBuilder as I has no reliable trades people to work with and I wanted a good job to de done. My Father passed away due to Alzeimhers 3 years ago and due to his care needs we had to place him in a local Care Home. We were very lucky that the care and support he and we received from the Care Home was exemplary and he was safe and happy with them. My Mum and Dad had been married for 62 years when we lost my Father. My Mum was 85 years old and had to come to terms with life without the love of her life and was doing very well to cope in her bungalow in Newcastle but in 2017 she had Pneumonia and then broke both her hips within 6 months of each other. This had a major impact on both her confidence and her ability to live alone all of the time. Mam is still very independent and the choice to put her in a Care Home is not an option for her. I was fortunate enough to be able to retire to look after my Mum to enable her to stay in her own home. I also made the decision that, when the time is right, she will come to live with me. In order for this to happen I need to convert the downstairs toilet and lobby area of my home to a wet room for her to use when she comes to visit and when she moves in with me. This was quite an undertaking as I had no idea where to start and there was lots of building work to consider as well as the fitting of the shower, toilet, basin etc. It was also vital that all of the work and the fittings took into account the disability that my Mam has with her inability to walk without a walking aide.
I was initially contacted by Mick Carney of MC Ceramics. He reviewed the work required and stated that he was confident that he knew the Builder, Plumber and Electrician that could complete the project. He arranged for each of the other Tradesmen to contact me, which they did within 7 days. I was very impressed with the professionalism, knowledge and advice provided by each Tradesmen and I had the assurances that I needed to proceed with the work. We agreed a start date and each Tradesman worked with the others to ensure a well organised work schedule which meant that there was never a day that the project was not being worked on. Once the work started I was extremely impressed with the workmanship and care and attention that each Tradesman used. The room in question was in the middle of a 250 year old house and I did not want any damage done to any other part of the house. They achieved this. Additionally each Tradesmen took the time to check every fitting with me and Mam to make sure it was fitted for her and not just fitted where they thought. An example of this was the positioning of the toilet to accommodate the future toilet surround and the height of the shower for Mam when seated in her shower chair. The ElectricIan also advised on a motion sensor for the lights so that Mam can walk in without having to take her hands off her walking aide.
To say that the completed project surpassed our expectations is an under statement. It is absolutely perfect and means that when my Mam comes to stay she feels safe and secure when she uses it. Everyone visiting the house is impressed with the outcome.
As if that wasn't enough, each and every Tradesmen was a pleasure to spend time with and also took great care to look after my 2 dogs to both make them feel comfortable and ensure that all doors were closed at all times so that they didn't escape onto the road outside. This meant a lot to me.
The work to approximately a month from start to finish and I can say that I was sad to see the Tradesmen go as they had been great company.

I have since used Mick on another job in my house which again was done to a brilliant standard.

I come from a customer service and customer experience background and I value this in every aspect of my life. As such I have no hesitation in putting Mick and his team of colleagues forward for this prestigious competition. I hope that the review of my experiences has helped other people to achieve a great outcome to.

My Mam and I can now look forward to happy times in my home together for as long as I can look after her.

Thank you for taking the time to read this submission.

Pleased to see Mick's nomination for My Builder, Job of The Year. Having employed Mick in the past to modernise my bathroom I have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone requiring this kind of work.
