We moved to Wellington less than two years ago into our house in Churchfields. At the time of our move we were told by the surveyor that the slate roof would need a considerable amount of work in the near future. He also pointed out the chimney on the gable end was leaning.
As we are new to the area we did not know any local builders who would be able to undertake the work to a satisfactory standard, so after a search on the internet we should be able to find a competent roofer through using the service offered by My Builder.
We asked four firms for quotes for the work and from these we selected Paul Royal who runs The Roofing Firm. His was not the most expensive quote, and nor was it the cheapest. But it did seem to us to offer value for money.
In total it took Paul just ten days to strip the roof, saving as many of the original slates as possible. A new good quality breathable membrane was fixed and then new battens. All lead work (flashing, valleys, etc.) was renewed with the redundant leaning chimney being removed and capped below the new roof level before the old usable slates were refitted, a quantity of them being made up with similar used slates. While he was up there on the roof he took the opportunity to re-point the main chimney and fit a cowl to it.
To finish the job off he fitted a dragon finial that we had obtained to the front apex.
To get the job finished as quickly as possible he and his team worked over the Easter weekend. He even enlisted the help of his wife for some of the time.
At the end of each day he swept up any mess that had accumulated during the day's work and at the end of the job the whole site was cleaned up.
I would recommend Paul to anyone who need any roofing work undertaken. We certainly made the correct choice when we accepted his quote.
