As first-time homeowners, my husband and I were at a loss when, after some power outage issues, an electrician told us our house would need a full rewire. We decided to get a second opinion, and thank heaven we did. Matt and his colleague not only set our expectations for future tradesmen in terms of thoroughness and efficiency, but also in plain old professionalism. They came to do a full test of our electrics on the same day I posted the job, and set to work immediately. I noticed right away that they seemed to be approaching the task in a way totally different to the previous team. In the meantime, I told them what the first testers found and said. Matt offered no personal criticism; he said that he disagreed (completely) and explained why. He further indicated what he thought did need updating or replacing, and indeed his full written diagnostic/test results were in my email inbox that evening (I did not get this with the other gents), along with the invoice. It was a very small price to pay not only for peace of mind, but especially for knowing to look for in service (and to ask for written records). This last component, part of training as homeowners, is what made Matt's job for us an invaluable one.
PS. The guys were also very kind to and patient with our rather nosy cat...
