The Thornton Heath Salvation Army building is a vital hub in the centre of the community. I have lived next door for the last 8 weeks while I renovate a flat and I have got to know a little of the work they do. From providing space for people young and old to learn music; slimming club; subsidised cheap meals twice a week for anyone; food gifts to the hungry;a listening ear for the troubled; and on Sunday the community really comes alive with prayer and singing throughout the day and into the evening. They provide storage and support for the local street market and I guess that's only the tip of what they do quietly and unsung to " love thy neighbour ". In the summer,I am told, they have a picnic day in their back yard. (You couldn't call it a garden) You can see from the pictures what a dismal place that would be to sit in. On behalf of the Salvation Army in Croydon and the people of Croydon who rely on them, celebrate the important events of their lives here...I ask "please can they have a proper happy garden with flowers instead of rubbish to sit in and enjoy.

The vulnerable people cared for by this Salvation Army church need somewhere quiet and beautiful as part of their healing.
