Revealed: The UK's fantasy garden

It seems our love of our gardens has only grown after a year of enforced lockdowns.

It’s not unusual for garden jobs to increase at this time of year, but a 250% rise compared to last month is unprecedented.

To celebrate the arrival of spring and this renewed focus on gardens, we asked the public which features they’d love to have in their ideal outdoor plot.

We gave the results to garden designer Tim Miller and asked him to conjure up exactly what the perfect dream garden would look like - and the result is stunning.

It includes the most popular features - a summer house, outdoor dining area and quiet place to read and reflects the fact that we’ve truly embraced garden cooking as well as dining, with an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven.

The garden good life

Many told us they craved a taste of rural life, with a quarter saying they’d install a veg patch to ‘grow their own’ and many dreaming of a stream, mature trees and even a nature reserve, so they're included too.

Unsurprisingly after a year of social restrictions, 62% told us they will welcome guests into their garden as soon as they are allowed, with entertainment top of mind when fantasising about their ideal garden; a large seating area for guests would be a priority for 26%, with a firepit (23%), swimming pool (21%), drinks bar (15%), and an outside projector (9%) also making the list.

76% of respondents said their garden had positively helped their mental health during the pandemic, with 64% appreciating their garden more as a result.

Perhaps that's why 44% of respondents reported that getting their garden sorted was a priority for 2021, with an average of £1452 set to be spent on improving their outdoor space in the coming year.

Coming into spring is always a busy time for gardeners and landscapers but this year has been like no other.

If you’re planning to improve your outdoor plot, you need to get cracking as many gardeners and landscapers are getting quickly booked up.
