The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the official gas registration body for the Great Britain in 2009 and Northern Ireland in 2010. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register.

What they do for consumers

The Gas Safe Register performs regular inspections of Gas Safe registered engineers and has a dedicated team who track down those working illegally.

As well as providing general advice on gas safety, checking ID cards, and what to do in an emergency, Gas Safe also investigates reported complaints against its members and takes action where appropriate.

What they do for members

The Gas Safe Register provides technical support and standards updates to registered engineers, as well as providing simple facilities to report notifiable gas work.

They consult with their members regularly on changes which may impact the register and provide a public entry in their database, which can be viewed by consumers.

Competent Persons Scheme

The Gas Safe Register is not technically a competent person scheme. In practice, however, its installers have the same responsibilities for complying with building regulations.
