Q

Removing Artex

we have some artex in our living room that we would like to get rid of. Is there an easy way of getting rid of this artex? it is quite thick in places (about an inch) as it was put on in a style that looks like butter spread on a slice of toast. what would be the easiest way of getting rid of the artex it or hiding it? could we sand it down it the thickest places and then put up a thick coat of fresh plaster over the top to hide it? or should we sand it right back and then skim the wall? Or is there a product that can be bought specifically for removing artex?

Q

Can I plasterboard over the artex on my ceiling and walls?

I have a house that is artexed on almost evry wall and ceiling, and I was quoted a price that was nearly £400 per room, which is just unaffordable. I was considering plasterboarding over the walls and ceiling and then using some plasterboard sealer before decorating- is this going to work?

Q

Would a professional plasterer use one coat plaster?

We've had our living room re plastered and the result is pretty poor in places, especially around sockets and near corners. The plasterer used one coat plaster which I've never come across before. I've had other jobs done and the plasterer's always used pink gypsum and the results have been much better. I want to get this guy back to improve the finish but need to know if other plasterers use this stuff.

Q

How smooth a finish can i expect from skimmed walls and ceiling

I have just had some walls and ceilings skimmed and i am unsure of what i should expect as i have never hired a plastere before.

I have spent quite some time filling in scratches and sanding it down before i could paint it. i also had to fill and shape some corners because the plasterer said that was not his job as he was not a decorator.

Is this the finish one should expect after having trades men in or should a skimming job be ready for paint without me having to do any work?

Q

Anybody use carlite bonding? is it better than sand/cement render

ive recently bought a house that needs full renovation. All the internal walls were black mortar which was crumbling etc so i have hacked it all off back to the stone work. I now want to put a sand/cement render coat on the walls but the plasterer who has quoted on doing the house has said he would not do the job if someone else rendered the walls. Instead of rendering the walls he wants to use carlite bonding and plaster over the top. Does anybody know if this is ok and does it have any disadvantages over sand/cement render. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
Thanks to everyone who replied, your advice is appreciated and taken on board. Thanks again. Keep up the good work guys. Cheers

Q

I have a painted Artex ceiling which is putting up too much of a fight to consider stripping in the timeframe i have. Would it be better to get it skimmed or foam backed plasterboard over?

Its the peaked type artex of unknown age and fairly heavily painted (but probably not pre 90's). Ceiling is sloped and lowered near the window. I have been quoted £200 for a 11.5m2 room is this a decent priced for skimming?

Q

We're thinking about getting the ceiling in our upstairs bedroom either skimmed or replaced. It is uneven in places and some lines (like raised cracks) are visible. What's best?

We're not sure how long it has been like this as we just moved in. The property is a smallish Victorian semi. Should we look at replacing the ceiling or get it skimmed?

Q

I have just had four ceilings skimmed and one of them has just fallen down

it was just the new skim that has fallen down, I trust the plasterer and hope it is just one of those things, so far the other larger ceilings haven't come down so fingers crossed !! I am worried though as the ceiling skim that fell down is due to be a nursery. The skim was put up over the old ceiling artex type stuff.
