Does anyone know of a user friendly estimating software for extension or small build costing that is designed for a small to medium sized company?
I'm looking for software to speed up our internal quotations for extensions etc If anyone uses a particular software key benifits would be greatly recieved.
I'm not looking for abuse such as KTL is giving. The software is for use by office staff to speed up the estimating process. I personally do not have the time to quote for the ammount of work we have come in verses management of staff, and material organisation, running the two maintenance contracts we have and also dealing with the day to day running of a growing business. This question is asked to professionals who see the benefit of such software. If I were a one man band flying around in a transit doing a few jobs a month, it's easy to deal with the quotation process and manage to work on the tools with the only headache being finding the nearest butty shop, but i'm a little beyond this now and there are not enough hours in the day!! I'm sure a professional can understand this.
Thanks for your input guys, and taking the time out to suggest some software, i'm sure your very busy and I appreciate it.

My UPVC front door does not double lock. It opens from the outside with the key but when you lift the handle and attempt to double lock it the key wont turn. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks
Thanks for the responses. The door has been realigned however even with the door open the key won't turn in the lock.

As the previous tradesman have said, sounds like the door has dropped. this dose happen after a time and may need adjusting by repacking the glass/panel. This is a job best left to a fitter if you are unsure as it will need to be deglazed, also it my be a problem with the lock. Best way to check this is to open the door and try locking it in the open position if it is easy to lock then it is the door that needs to be adjusted.

We have had quotes from the 2 top providers to replace all windows in..
...our house and the front door. Our windows are currently timber framed and look nice, other than the fact the wood is starting to rot, plus some of the double glazed windows have condensation in them. What I don't like is that they give you an over-inflated cost and then give you a discount so you think you're getting a bargain.
Anyway the house is a 3 bed townhouse on three floors, kitchen bay window, two windows first floor front, rear patio doors, with 2 full length side windows either side of the patio doors, 2 rear bedroom windows and one window top floor at rear.
We were quoted £18,000 for the job done in upvc but "timber look," and £ about £23,000 for all wndows done in timber and treated so they will not rot - is this even possible (Everest say it is)?
Can any smaller independent specialist do the job better and give a better quote?
Thanks.

Is 50% deposit in advance a reasonable payment plan for small conservatory build?
We have been quoted £7000 by a small conservatory company who we have checked the references of and all seems satisfactory. Their payments terms however are 50% deposit in advance and 50% on approved completion.
I'm seeking advice on whether this is a reasonable deposit for materials and if so, what is the best way to safeguard the client and contractor? Would it be acceptable to pay 50% on receipt of materials on site in our name?
Thanks,

Hi as most have already said you must have a contract spelling out what works are to be done before before you hand over any sort of payment it is fairly common in the double glazing industry to ask for a deposite but as an installer we normaly ask for am third up front with balance on completion .
hope that helps

How can you tell the quality and difference of double glazing/ acoustic glazing
I have just had some windows fitted some are acoustic and some are double glazing, i wondered how i tell the difference between the acoustic glass and the double glazing glass? both look the same and only one of the 6 windows has a marking on it?
Does that mean the others are of a differenct quality/batch as they look the same but then again i dont really know what im looking for!
Should all of the the windows have marking?when i saw marking i mean the little stamp in one of the corners of the pane. Many thanks,

Most of my double glazed windows are misted up. Why does the glass have to be replaced when it is the seals that have gone. Can the glass not just be cleaned and new seals?
I asked the firm but did not get a satisfactory reply. Is this not wasteful considering the glass has to be disposed of in landfill?

Hi as previous person said it is cheaper to make a new unit , you may find some installers will recycle all old glass , all our glass wate goes to be turned in to insulation fibers , ask the question when getting people to quote .

Hi, I am considering having secondary glazing fitted inside having my very large single glazed windows (bit worried its going to be chilly in the winter). I got a quote from Everest, but it seemed high so wondered if anyone on this site had good experience with an alternative company?

Beading leak from DG panel
I have a DG front door with a fixed panel alongside with upper and lower DG panels. It is south facing and when we get rain and wind from that direction there is a leak from the beading at the bottom edge of the upper panel. I would have thought that any water coming in from that area would drain down through the internal frame channels to the drain hole at the bottom of the frame. I intend to remove the beading and panel to see why - any tips what I should be looking for?
