Realign door porch pillars, re-attach porch to house

  • Location: Reading
  • Hired: HERRINGBONE
  • Trade: Groundwork & Foundations
Job Description

This job might best suit a builder with heavy lifting gear.

The requirement is to realign the two door porch pillars, which due to the shallow foundation have leaned, and have detached the porch from the house.

The porch is of hollow glass fibre construction and looks to be fairly lightweight, but the pillars are plaster/or glass fibre casts filled with concrete and are very heavy. The foundation 'appears' to be a cube of concrete. The porch is attached to the top of the pillars with steel pins I'm told.

I've been told that to realign these pillars properly requires heavy lifting gear and the establishment of a concrete foundation of at least 1 metre. But I am open to professional suggestions on how to remedy the pillar lean, and solutions that are more permanent than the original. e.g. there might be same style pillars but not filled with concrete - that might be less susceptible to sinking into the ground. (and being lighter, are more managable in the future should they move)

The soil is high content clay.

If you look at the photos, the pillars are leaning away from the house and have pulled the porch away from the house - a gap is visible between the porch and the rear end has dropped - raising the front off the tops of the pillars.(you can see the gap between the top of the pillars and the porch in the photos)
