Replacement of 2 Manhole Covers and frames
- Location: Waltham Cross
- Hired: dsd brickwork and property maintenance
- Trade: Groundwork & Foundations
- Positive feedback on 29th Jul 11
Job Description
Just moved in to a 3 bed semi with a shared driveway. On the shared concrete driveway are two square manhole covers which are broken. Previous owner has sourced two new covers and frames (Rudridge 12 tonne rated cast metal - not aluminium) and left them for me to do! I'm looking for a reliable builder to remove the old frames and cement in the new ones. Approximate cost would be helpful. Thanks.
Louise.

Summerhouse Base
- Location: Waltham Abbey
- Hired: Twiggs
- Trade: Groundwork & Foundations
- Positive feedback on 11th Mar 11
Job Description
This Project involves construction of a base for a new 12ft by 16ft (3.66m by 4.88m) Summerhouse. A retaining wall is also required at the rear of the site (4.7m wide, with one corner) – constructed of suitable concrete blocks.
The base is to be constructed at the top of a 100ft (30m) terraced garden. A plan showing the dimensions of the proposed base can be found along with some photos, one of which has two tape measures to illustrate the location, length & width of the proposed base on the site.
The site will need to be cleared of the following material prior to laying of the new concrete slab:
- Approx 15 Paving Slabs 600mm sq, some of which have mortar remains on them. These are to have the mortar chipped off and the slabs are to be set aside for re-use. One row of slabs is to be left in situ (which would mean that they would end up at the front of the summerhouse).
- A 2m by 2m slab of concrete, which will need to be broken up (the material could then be used for hardcore).
- 6m of a 1m wide crazy paving path – the material could be broken up and used for hardcore.
- The remains of a brick wall – 2 courses approx 1.5m long.
- Further hardcore may need to be brought to the site and compacted as necessary.
The new concrete base will need to comprise of a minimum of 100mm thick concrete. The base will need to be of suitable concrete, with steel reinforcement if necessary. It will need to be an ‘L’ shape to take into account an existing concrete base
There is a level difference of approximately 150mm between the front and the rear of the site.
The block retaining wall will need to be 800mm high, and a total of 4.7m long (1.0m into a corner, followed by a further 3.7m). This will need a suitable concrete footing and the top of the wall will need to have coping stones.
The main challenge with this work, is the route that materials required and materials to be disposed of will need to take. The delivery and removal route is described as follows (from top to bottom of the garden):
10 Steps (could be avoided by using a sloped lawn – protection of the grass would be required).
15 meters of a 1.4m wide path.
10 Steps.
7 meters of a patio area.
5 Steps.
16 meters of a concrete/paved path (there is a narrow point of 0.75m).
12 meters of path to the front boundary of the property.
230V power is available from a greenhouse approx 15m away from the site.
There is an area of lawn at the front of the property which could be used for a skip if necessary, and jumbo materials bags as required.
Further photographs could be provided by email. The recommendations provided by the summerhouse manufacturer for the base can also be provided by email. Visits to the site are also possible by prior arrangement. The work is required as soon as possible. Payment to be on completion of the work.
Please feel free to email any further questions.
