We want to convert our small front garden into a driveway. I've had a couple of quotes but our house is a very old cottage and I'm looking for a contractor who has ideas to help us do it in a way that's sensitive to the age of the house - both quotes so far have suggested just bricking the whole area which we don't want to do. I would love to hear from any contractors with experience in doing driveways in older properties or working with reclaimed materials who can suggest ways we can have a driveway without ruining the charm of our house.

Just to clarify, I'm happy with the idea of a brick driveway, we just want to try and do it cleverly so we're left with some garden space, not just paving. So I'm hoping someone can advise us on the best way to achieve this.

Excavation to a level area (at roughly level of motorbike) and creation of concrete driveway suitable for erection of timber frame garage (area is approximately 5 meters long and 6m wide). Retaining walls around this area (replacement of existing brick wall), and creation of stairs down to this area from garden. Use excavated soil behind retaining wall to level off garden slightly.

Access isn't brilliant. I've got a 3.5 Tonne Luton van there but it was difficult and needed I a banksman (someone more skilled could probably do it without, but I don't think you'd get anything bigger round the corner).

Would also be interested in quotes for a rendered / high-fly-ash-block garage with a green roof (could be combined with the retaining walls). Would want it built under permitted development.

Need building work done as soon as possible as am losing existing storage for a car!
