Possible chimney repair - water may be leaking inside?
- Location: Oldham
- Hired: c highley building and roofing contractors
- Trade: Chimneys & Fireplaces
- Positive feedback on 30th Apr 12
Job Description
I've noticed discolouration and a slight build up of mould on the upstairs ceiling around the chimney breast. Not a huge amount, and it's possible it may be due to the heating being turned off for a while, but it seems odd it's just around the chimney, which leads be to believe water may be getting in? I'd like a quote for going onto the roof to check and repair if necessary, thank you.
(House is end-terrace, chimney is used by gas fire, slate roof)

Water getting behind wall paper on chimney stack
- Location: Bury
- Hired: rapid roof repair
- Trade: Chimneys & Fireplaces
- Positive feedback on 7th Feb 11
Job Description
I have recently had a Roofer out to try and fix the problem of water getting behind the wallpaper on the left hand side of the chimney stack in our bedroom.
He tried the following things and is at a loss to what could be causing the problem:
1) Replaced the lead flashings and getting the water to run to the other side of the chimney stack
2) Put new felt on either side of the chimney stack
3) Painting on some waterproof sealer at the top of the lead flashings
4) Adjusted the tiles leading to the back of the chimney stack by putting wood under the tiles.
The builder did advise there were signs of condensation however when it rained quite heavily the water would get behind the wallpaper on the left hand side of the chimney stack in the bedroom.
However all these plus other attempts do not seem to have cured the problem so the builder did not charge me which was nice of him!
I went into the loft yesterday and the chimney stack just below the tiles still appears to be wet (there was heavy rain last weekend!) so for now I have put a towel there to try and stem the water coming down.
Please can someone give some advise and quote a price, hopefully not charging until the problem has been fixed.
Thank You
Carl

Opening up ground floor chimney breast
- Location: Oldham
- Hired: HDB
- Trade: Chimneys & Fireplaces
- Positive feedback on 15th Apr 09
Job Description
Hi, I will soon be refitting a kitchen which has a closed chimney breast (1m80 wide) with currently a small 70s gas fire in front of it.
I don't know what the original opening was and where there is a lintel... but I would like to open it up so as to either put:
- an oven and gas hob (about 1m20 wide by 1m90 high opening)
OR
- an american fridge/freezer (about 1.8m high x 0.9m wide)
The choice will depend on the possible opening.
I would like realistic quotes from experienced tradesmen in this area.
The house is in Chadderton, Oldham. The job would be in April as I don't have yet the keys for the house.
Payment for the job will be on completion, by cheque or cash, and will require an invoice.
Many thanks
