Before we can undergo some damp proof work we need to cap the chimney at the back of our house. There are two pots - I think one may be capped already, although am not sure. I can supply a photo of the pots to help decide whether one or two need doing. If you can supply the necessary cap as well that would be helpful (although not essential). chimney cowel
- Location: Forest Hill
- Hired: Lions Roofing
- Trade: Chimneys & Fireplaces
- Positive feedback on 12th Feb 13
Job Description
Hi,
We have a chimney in a bedroom where when there is rain, we hear drops coming down every so often, sometimes quite a lot.
There is some plastic shoved up the chimney for draft prevention and the rain hitting the plastic is quite loud. I figure it is a chimney cowel issue, but I'm not entirely sure...
Is this something you would be able to assess and take care of? The property is in honor oak park, SE23.
Kind Regards
Go Sugimoto
* Added 6th February, 2013 :
The chimney is disused as it stands and will most likely not be used in the near future. Perhaps a cowel but also solutions such as the below, to maintain ventilation but complete protection from rain, etc.

unless otherwise its use it dissuaded.

Fit 2 cast iron fire surrounds, one with a gas fitting
- Location: Woolwich
- Hired: c gibbs installations
- Trade: Chimneys & Fireplaces
- Positive feedback on 30th Jan 13
Job Description
We have 2 cast iron fire surrounds incl. mantelpiece that require installing.
The first will be fitted into a chimney breast with an existing hole:
- make up and fit fire surround
- install gas fire
- there is some work required to the base of the fire place as the cement is cracked and damaged
The second will installed in an adjacent chimney breast but the hole has been bricked up:
- re-create the fire place opening
- make up and fit the fire surround
- this will not be a working fire place as the chimney breast in the rooms above is being removed
The chimney has been recently swept and we have the certificate. The only work that needs to be completed before the gas fire can be installed is to render the chimney breast bricks in the loft (there was evidence of leakage during the smoke test). Please include this work in your quote if you are able or we can arrange for this separately.
A site visit is welcome. We are located in Wandsworth in south-west London.
