Clean heat exchanger on combi boiler
- Location: Manor Park
- Hired: L.D Plumbing and Heating
- Trade: Central Heating
- Positive feedback on 14th May 13
Job Description
Hi
The hot water on a 7 month old 24kw Potterton Titanium combi boiler is playing up. It appears that the secondary heat exchanger needs a clean.
The hot water gets too hot and then the boiler stops heating for a few seconds and then heats and this happens repeatedly. The effect on the hot water tap is that the hot water comes and goes every few seconds. Heating is working ok.
It is probably my fault as I replaced some radiators after the boiler was installed but waited too long to add inhibitor!
FYI I have just added Sentinel X400 cleaner into the system and will add X100 inhibitor after I drain the system in a few days/weeks. Hopefully this will mean no more problems hot water problems in the future once the heat exchanger has been cleaned.
I am looking for a quote for someone to clean (not replace) the heat exchanger. Gas Safe people only please.

Additional information:
- I do have a magnaclean fitted.
- I haven't considered the warranty option yet because I thought that as I hadn't taken proper precautions before fitting my new radiators it wouldn't be covered.
- The system had been powerflushed when the boiler was fitted back in October but I then decided to replace some of the old radiators one by one over the winter. I left 3 radiators but as I didn't add any inhibitor I guess these would have corroded over time.
- The original installer has already cleaned the heat exchanger once for me 2 months ago as a free favour and told me to run some cleaning solution and then add inhibitor but due to my lazyness in the cold weather I delayed too long and the problem returned.
- I will consider replacing the remaining 3 radiators. I haven't done this already as the pripework needs adjusting for these and I can't do that. However, my current priority is to get my hot water back.
