Laying stone edging tiles on a garden pathway
- Location: Cambridge
- Hired: JK Brickwork
- Trade: Bricklaying
- Positive feedback on 9th Apr 13
Job Description
The side of our house has a long and thin patio pathway from the front of the house to the back garden. The patio path needs a border to retain the soil of the plant border, it doesn’t have to be high. Currently, the plant border is nothing but poor quality soil, no plants in it yet. The area is approximately 14m long; I calculate it needs about 30 x stone cable tiles (we will order and have delivered). The tiles need to be set into the soil with sand and cement for a strong, straight border; some of them will have to be cut to size. We want a neat straight edge running the length of the border. There will be some old concrete edging to be removed.
Build wall to split an existing room in two
- Location: Cambridge
- Hired: A J Carpentry Services
- Trade: Conversions - General
- Positive feedback on 14th Mar 13
Job Description
I am thinking of splitting my living room in two so I will end up having a smaller living room + an office/guest room.
As I don't want to lose day light, the idea is not to brick all the wall, but just a small part of it covering the door frame + around 0.7 meters up from the floor, plus a big window.
The job is in central Cambridge.
Builder-decorator required to update 70's family home
- Location: Royston
- Hired: Nick Construction
- Trade: Restoration & Refurbishment
- Positive feedback on 13th Mar 13
Job Description
Three bedrooms each in need of fitted wardrobe removal (including one of these bedrooms requiring removal of a shower cubical) and decorating (painting).
Bedrooms also require removal of 70's spotlights and replacement with more conventional light fittings.
Two living rooms requiring painting (one is papered and has fittings - such as built-in cupboard and dado rail - which will need to be removed), as well as ceiling fan removal and replacement of 70's spotlights with conventional light fittings.
We have just moved in and own the property. There is not much in terms of contents. The property is 70's build and structurally sound, but horrible to look at inside!
We would be very grateful for a quote (including labour and materials). We would also appreciate an estimated time-scale, as my wife is due to give birth in 8wks.
Many thanks!
Rebuild canopy style porch after vehicle impact
- Location: Cambridge
- Hired: Francis Property Developments Ltd.
- Trade: Restoration & Refurbishment
- Positive feedback on 20th Feb 13
Job Description
the porch consisted of 2 small brick walls, with timber structures (vertical beams) holding up a canopy style roof. I can forward a picture... The house is 11 years old and is in good condition. A vehicle hit one of the walls and the whole structure fell down. This is an insurance claim so would need to be rebuilt in the same design as the original. The orignal structure is still where is landed so will need clearing, please can this be included in the quote.
Supply and construct a 19x6 shed base from paving slabs
- Location: Cambridge
- Hired: JK Brickwork
- Trade: Garages & Sheds
- Positive feedback on 13th Feb 13
Job Description
We would like a 19x6 ft shed base to be constructed at the bottom of our garden.
The ground on which the base is to be constructed is mostly grass apart from a bit of flower bed and a couple of existing paving stones. However, it slopes away from the house slightly so the ground will also need some levelling.
It would be desirable to also have a 4x2 ft extra area of paving in the middle at the front for shed door clearance.
Despite having a link-detatched house, there is no external access to the back garden and the easiest access is a straight line from the road through the garage and out of the single back door. This probably dictates the use of paving slabs to construct the shed base as all materials will need to be brought though.
Ideally the quote would include labour and materials, although we would consider buying the materials ourselves, with appropriate direction, if more competitive.
* Added 11th January, 2013 :
Possibly, the shed might be 19x5 ft as it needs to be 1ft away from the fence.

Job Description
I need someone to be able to climb to the top of my chimney (on a two-storey, semi-detatched property) to change the cowl/nest on top of my chimney.
The original cowl was installed a few weeks ago by a cowboy and is totally unsuitable for the type of fire I wish to install. I already have the correct cowl and just require someone to remove the old cowl and install the new one.

Job Description
We have had a small scale loft conversion carried out for storage use. Need some work done to complete it - may need more timber support for the roof. We had space saver staircase installed & no longer want it - ironically takes up valuble space & dangerous for our 1yr old! We'd like a normal loft hatch & ladder which means closing up space originally for staircase - will need timber support for loft flooring in its place?
Rebuild single leaf internal wall
- Location: Cambridge
- Hired: JK Brickwork
- Trade: Bricklaying
- Positive feedback on 4th Jan 13
Job Description
I have a single leaf internal wall 3.5m long, 2.6m high which is crumbling.
It is not load bearing, but is important as it acts as a lateral stabiliser for a wall which is.
So I'd like it rebuilt - estimated 528 bricks or 88 blocks - and it needs to be quite well keyed into the existing brickwork at the ends.
I'll provide materials (keeping the old bricks for a future extension as they're valuable, so will use new - blocks if possible to keep costs down)
