I recently moved in to my new home and after taking wall paper off of one of the walls in the living room I have discovered that there is a wooden board, rectangular shape nailed in to the centre of the wall, perhaps where there was a hatch? The problem is it doesnt lie flat to the wall so think it might need to be skimmed.
