Blocking hole to rat - Handyman job in Hayle, Cornwall

This was done for me in 2005, by a friend but he did not use chicken wire, apparently this is best with concrete and glass to block hole. The entry is under stairs, under floorboards, there could be more than one hole, so passage would need to be checked to, along one side an area of about 24ft under the floorboards next to wall. Rat only comes in at night, but has found his way behind my kitchen unit, which would be easier to show you what I mean as is next to stairs, this has never happened before, they have always stayed under the floor boards, but seem to have an entry now into back of cubboards from the understairs entry. I have informed S>W>Water as my understairs runs directly paralell to there manhole sewer cover, so they seem to be coming under the house next door which is quite new, and has concrete floors, to mine which have very old wood floors so easyier to get under, my kitchen is concrete floor and tiles so they are only getting in there now from understairs underfloor access. Please advise
